Moonstone has a way of drawing you in slowly. At first glance, it may seem soft and muted—but as it moves, a sheen of light glides across the surface. This optical effect, called adularescence, is what makes Moonstone so distinctive. Depending on the stone, this glow might be a cool blue flash, a silvery shimmer, or a warm, pearly radiance.
Where Moonstone Comes From
Moonstone is part of the feldspar mineral group and can be found in various parts of the world, including Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, and Tanzania. The finest blue-flash Moonstone often comes from Sri Lanka, while India is known for its rainbow varieties. Each source offers slightly different characteristics, but all carry that luminous quality that seems to shift with every glance.
A Long and Storied History
Moonstone has been treasured for centuries. The ancient Romans admired it, believing it was formed from solidified rays of moonlight. In India, it has long been considered a sacred and protective stone, often given as a traditional wedding gift. During the Art Nouveau period, Moonstone became a favorite of jewelers like René Lalique, who used it for its soft, romantic glow.
Color, Cut, and Character
Moonstone comes in shades from milky white to peach, grey, and even near-clear, sometimes with subtle inclusions or layering that add depth. Cabochon cuts are the most common, as they highlight the sheen across the surface, but rose cuts and freeform shapes can also reveal interesting plays of light.
It pairs beautifully with both Gold and Sterling Silver, with Gold bringing warmth to peach and cream tones, and Silver enhancing the cooler blues and greys.
What Draws Me to Moonstone
Moonstone feels alive in a subtle way. It changes throughout the day—sometimes glowing brightly in natural light, other times showing just a hint of its inner shimmer. It’s not about perfection or uniformity; each stone has its own movement and personality. When I design with Moonstone, I try to let that character take the lead, creating settings that protect and highlight its softness.
A Gem for Everyday Moments
With a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, Moonstone should be worn with some care, but it’s durable enough for regular use in earrings, pendants, and rings with protective settings. It’s a stone that brings a touch of light to even the simplest design—and one that never feels out of place, no matter the season.
I currently have loose Moonstones in stock and can create a custom piece designed specifically for you. Whether you’re drawn to the cool blue flash or the warmer peach tones, we can work together to bring your vision to life.
